Public School NYC (PSNY) Fall 2017 Collection, New York Fashion Week
Public School (PSNY) Fall 2017, New York Fashion Week
Fashion brand Public School NYC has asserted itself as somewhat of a streetwear institution. With a modern, urban vibe and a global perspective designers, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne are building one of the most influential streetwear brands of the decade. Taking inspiration from the diversity they share and a love of New York City, PSNY Fall 2017 has a political agenda.
With a recent exit from their high-profile stint at DKNY, many wondered what it meant for the future of the PSNY label. The designers assure us that all is well, however, offering a well-edited collection full of swagger. The first model who entered the narrowed runway was the messenger. The contents: A red baseball cap with the words Make America New York writ in white letters. The statement was an obvious riff of a rather famous Make America Great Again slogan courtesy of President Trump. However, this is certainly no gesture of admiration. It’s quite the opposite.
Dao-Yi and Maxwell join the long list of designers with much to say this Season. The heart of the collection steers toward a nineties inspired grunge mantra. From flannels and check prints to denim, the clothes had a New York swagger. Michael Jordan even makes an appearance by way of screen-print knit hoodies and sweatshirts. A sense of ease and rebellion is also shown through fit. Pants and shorts are relaxed but not baggy and tops slouch just so.
Ironically, the color palette possesses a slight Americana undertone. Red, white, blue, black, and a khaki-hued brown dominate most looks. We even see another flash of the familiar campaign motif, but this time in the form of a crop top for emphasis. There’s certainly no confusion over where Public School NYC’s Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne stand. The message is quite clear and their fans are definitely on-board. Make America New York. Perhaps the next great slogan of 2017, eh?
