The other evening the 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. The Council of Fashion Designers of America honored the world’s creatives at fashion’s biggest awards show. The evening was hosted by TV personality, Joel McHale.
Award recipients included names like Thom Browne, securing the honor of Menswear Designer of the Year, as well as Mansur Gavriel winning Accessory Designer of the Year. Anna Wintour presented the International Award to Italian fashion house Gucci’s Alessandro Michele. Alexa Chung presented to Business of Fashion, the Media Award. Brandon Maxwell received the Swarovski award for womenswear, whilst giving a touching acceptance speech that even brought Naomi Campbell to tears.
The Fashion Icon Award is consecutively revealed each year in advance, with this exception of this year. This year, the award was not announced ahead of time and therefore created a frenzy of speculation and queries as to who may be the recipient. Unknown to all, Diane von Furstenberg presented the CFDA Fashion Icon of the Year award to none other than, Beyonce.
Upon acceptance the artist revealed the fashion tribulations and triumphs faced in the early days of Destiny’s Child. The singer quotes, “When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t want to dress four black country girls. We couldn’t afford designer dresses. My mom was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and creativity to give her children their dreams. My mother and my Uncle Jonny designed all of our first costumes and made each piece by hand. And when I wore these clothes onstage, I felt like I had an extra suit of armor. It was so much deeper than any brand name…my mother and my uncle and my grandmother were with me. I couldn’t fail.”
David Bowie was honored in a tribute letter read out by Tilda Swinton. Bowie was honored with the Board of Directors’ Tribute. Tilda Swinton was personally asked by Iman to accept the award. The night concluded with a finale of Prince’s most famed hits. Jennifer Hudson performed the medley to CFDA decorated audience.
