Kanye West Yeezy Season 5 is Already the Most Talked About Show in Fashion.
Kanye West is no stranger scrutiny or naysayers. When people say he can’t or he shouldn’t he simply does it anyway. However, the latest controversy concerning Kanye West Yeezy Season 5 may be too much, even for Yeezus. In case you missed Yeezy Season 4 and the theatrics that entailed, let’s review. Last year for Yeezy Season 4, Kanye debuted his latest collection during New York Fashion Week. However, Kanye failed to go through the well-established channels of the CFDA, the fashion committee that runs the event. With hundreds of editors and fashion-goers it’s easy to see why scheduling is a very important. Even with the conflict and the out-of-the-way location of Roosevelt Island, hundreds of guests flocked to Yeezy. Even Vogue’s Anna Wintour was in attendance. A few hours later, after a rather long dramatic pause, the show began. See the problem?
With an entourage that includes the world’s most famous woman, Kim Kardashian. A Kanye West New York Fashion Week show places media in an absolute gridlock. Magazines and news outlets have to choose between getting a snap of Kanye and the Kardashian-Jenner clan or reviewing a normal fashion collection. Let’s just say, Kim Kardashian always wins.
After the very public criticism of Yeezy Season 4, many assumed that Kanye would be a bit more courteous this time around. Obviously, those people don’t know Mr. West. Instead, Kanye announced that he’d be debuting Yeezy Season 5 on February 15 at 5 p.m. EST. For a moment, fashion goers share relief as Kanye also shares that the show will be at popular NYFW venue, Pier 59 studios. However, the calm didn’t last long. It turns out that the Yeezy Season 5 time slot directly conflicted with two other major brand showings. Evening-wear brand Marchesa and streetwear label Assembly found themselves in direct line of fire of the Adidas backed Yeezy Season 5 schedule.
News traveled fast and eventually made it’s way to the CFDA. Soon after the organization’s CEO Steven Kolb responded with a very candid statement to WWD. “Once again, CFDA was not approached or consulted about the possibility of Kanye West showing on the official New York Fashion Week schedule,” Kolb shared. “Not going through the proper channels is disruptive to the whole week and unfair to designers who have secured spots through the formal procedure.”
The CFDA is willing to work with Kanye to reschedule Yeezy Season 5 for a more opportune time (one that does not directly conflict with Marchesa or, potentially, Anna Sui, Thom Browne and Assembly). However, as things stand, the organization will not be adding Yeezy Season 5 to the official Fashion Week calendar. “This bad behavior is not acceptable to the CFDA and should not be tolerated by the industry,” Kolb affirmed. And yet, we expect many will “tolerate” an invite anyway.
Thankfully this story doesn’t end like a Taylor Swift song or Taylor Swift/Kanye West at the VMAs. After thinking it over, Kanye opts to take the advice of the CFDA, Kolb, and the majority of the fashion community and reschedule. Perhaps it was too much opposition, even for Kanye. Kolb shared his appreciation in another statement to WWD. “Kanye called me personally to let me know that he had no intention of showing on top of another designer, and was unaware that there was a conflict,” Kolb shared. “He explained that once he realized Marchesa was in the time slot, he immediately looked at alternative options. The CFDA appreciates Kanye’s outreach and effort, and we look forward to working with him far in advance to integrate Yeezy into the schedule in seasons to come.”
So for the first time in years, Kanye West and the CFDA seem to be in agreement. Yeezy Season 5 will now take place on February 15 at 3 p.m. EST and will even appear on the official Fashion Week calendar issued by the CFDA. However, this still seems like an early win for Yeezy Season 5 to me, right? Add that to Kanye’s recent expansion of the Yeezy x Adidas brand and this may shape up to be Kanye’s biggest Yeezy Season yet.
