Yeezy Apparel Season 5, Best Clothes from Kanye West’s NYFW Show 2017
The Kanye West Yeezy Season 5 collection is undoubtedly the most hyped show at NYFW. Considering West’s logistical failures with his Season 4 show, no one knew quite what to expect this time around. Not to mention Kanye’s rather dramatic public chastening by the CFDA over his ‘inconsiderate’ scheduling just days earlier. However, to the surprise of critics, Yeezus simply decides to follow the oldest mantra in showbiz, The Show Must Go On. However, Kanye West’s Adidas Yeezy apparel show for still managed to deliver the unexpected.
For anyone present at last season’s Yeezy Season 4 on Roosevelt Island, the most notable change is the location. This time around, West invites guests to Pier 59 studios, a popular NYFW destination. Yet, very few were naive enough to expect a normal show. We are talking about Kanye West, after all. Just a year earlier, show goers found themselves at Madison Square garden at a joint Pablo listening party and Kanye Clothes runway show. However, today, Kanye isn’t performing. Taken inspiration from perhaps virtual reality, the designer presents his collection utilizing giant live video projections. Afterwards, with Kim Kardashian and Anna Wintour sitting front row, the Adidas Yeezy Season 5 collection made its way down the runway for a finale walk.
Now let’s talk about the actual Season 5 collection- the yeezy clothes. The change in the Kanye West apparel aesthetic is quite dramatic for anyone who’s seen any of the prior Adidas Yeezy Season clothing collections. For his first look, the designer presents a female model sporting an all denim ensemble. To our surprise next came more denim on denim and then denim and flannel. It’s immediately clear that this won’t be the nude spandex clad legion of Yeezy clothes looks from times past. The procession continues, offering a relaxed, grunge almost vintage feeling vibe. We soon see the first Yeezy men’s look, model Luka Sabbat in slouchy camouflage pants paired with an oversized, blue sweatshirt. On his feet are the new Yeezy runner.
Though the collection is much less sporty, it still holds on to its athleisure roots. Take for instance look 14, knee-high camo boots styled alongside an oversized gray sweatshirt and baseball cap. Paying homage to a few Adidas classics, we also see nineties feeling tracksuits and flashes of the Adidas 3-stripe logo on tops. For outerwear, Yeezy Season 5 apparel takes a few different directions. We see everything from denim jackets to puffers, hoodies, army camo jackets, and even a floor-length fur coat. Despite the changes in Kanye’s Adidas Yeezy, the main focus is still the Kanye West shoe lineup. For the occasion, Mr. West offers a signature selection of Yeezy boots from mid to knee-high styles for women. The men’s footwear offering is all about the bulky running shoe currently referenced as the Yeezy Runner, Yeezy 700 Runner, and the Yeezy Calabasas Runner.
In all, Yeezy Season 5 represents a time of transition for Kanye West, at least as a designer. Many critics wondered if they’d ever see anything other than nude bodysuits and sweatshirts from Yeezy clothes. Similarly, some even doubted there would every be a Yeezy Season show void of controversy or theatrics. On most points, Kanye West proves them all wrong with this collection. Although, I must admit Yeezy Season 5 isn’t particularly interesting or innovative. West has already done that though, right? We must also remember, that Yeezus is a brand off the runway. Words like Lost Hills and Calabasas emblazoned on sweatshirts are perhaps a figurative signature of the true message of Yeezy Season 5. Though we must now wait for the release of that so titled collaborative album with Drake to reach a final verdict. Very well done, Mr. West.
