Versace Presents a Sporty Spring Summer Collection Filled with Supermodels at Milan Fashion Week.
“This show is for women taking chances. Take the leap,” narrated a pulsing soundtrack as the show began. The Versace runway always presents an opportunity to gage the barometer of fashion. Donatella Versace has a knack for dialing into an ornate aesthetic that is sexy, glamorous, modern, and rebellious. This year, the designer added another adjective to her repertoire – sporty.
Versace set its focus toward the future for its Spring Summer 2017 collection and that future is ath-leisure. “Sportswear is the future of fashion,” Donatella wrote in her show notes. “To make it unique and luxurious is the challenge I took this season.” The designer brought her words to life with both form and functionality. Utilizing an invigorating color palette of purple, green, red, and blue, the runway echoed newfound sensibilities. The silhouettes offered signature thigh high, side-split, billowing Versace. Donatella’s true innovation was in her use of textiles. A mix of sporty nylon, jersey and versatile active fabrics replaced the designer’s usual choices of leather and silk. Bunched and often timed color-blocked in panels, the collection offered oversized windbreakers, trousers, skirts, crop tops, and even some throwback feeling logo t-shirts.
Following the haunting mantra of the collection’s soundtrack, Donatalla enlisted an A-list roster of veteran supermodels and new faces.  Edie Campbell opened the show followed by appearances from Gigi Hadid, Adriana Lima, Taylor Hill, Carmen Kass, Mariacarla Boscono, and Naomi Campbell.
The mere mention of Versace elicits an idea, a sea of analogies and visual motifs. Donatella Versace is unwavering in upholding the brand’s unique vision and this is the true essence of Versace. It’ll be interesting to see how the designer continues to innovate as she shifts towards a more activewear minded approach. Will she meet consumers in the middle or is she only baiting us to come over, as she’s done for decades now?
