A streetwear empire meets an athletic footwear dynasty in the Supreme Nike Uptempo shoe collaboration. So far, it appears that the drop will be even more iconic than the classic nike Air more Uptempo Olympic iteration. As of late, fans of both brands are experiencing a bit of product overload. We don’t mean that negatively, and you can be sure that no box logo or swoosh fans are complaining.
On the Supreme New York front, streetwear fans have been busy with collaborations ranging from North Face and Comme des Garcons shirt collections to a full-on Louis Vuitton Supreme line. Meanwhile, Nike fans are no less busy. Sneaker fans have been tempted with Nike footwear collabs including the Riccardo tisci Air Max 97, CDG NikeLab Air Vapor Max, Air Max Day line and the new Nike Converse Chuck Taylor Flyknit. However, full attention is now turning toward the 2017 Supreme Nike Uptempo.
A Brief History of the Uptempo Nike
James Jebbia‘s Supreme brand is known for blending modern references with its signature throwback style. Thus, the announcement of an Uptempo Nike is a match made in footwear heaven. This time around, fanatics may even compete with an older generation of sneakerheads. If you’re a 90s kid, you’re likely already familiar these popular basketball shoes. Worn by former Chicago Bulls star, Scottie Pippen, the Nike Uptempo quickly became a part of pop-culture footwear history. The bold swoosh basketball shoe even appears in a nike air more Uptempo Olympic version for the 1996 Olympic games. Designed in a patriotic navy/white color way, the nike air more Uptempo Olympic version was is worn by Scottie Pippen alongside the dream team. Less than a year later, entire families admire the Uptempo nike shoe on the feet of Brendan Fraser in 1997’s George of the Jungle film.
The nineties basketball sneaker classic has been making a bit of a mainstream comeback. In 2016, the brand brought back the Nike Air More Uptempo in celebration of its 20th Anniversary. Relaunching in its original form, fans went wild. Then, most recently, grail seekers welcomed a”Chicago Bulls” red/black colorway. The shoes sold out within minutes. It’s safe to assume that the Supreme x Nike Air More Uptempo will forego a similar fate of hysteria.
The Supreme Nike Air More Uptempo Design
Nicknamed the “Suptempo”, Supreme and Nike focus on all the aspects that made the original shoe a success. However, alongside the classic Uptempo silhouette are a few dramatic streetwear updates. The most obvious changeup is the replacement of the Uptempo Nike’s classic “AIR” branding with a new message. On the outer panel the word “SUP” appears before wrapping around to form the full “SUPREME” brand name. Available in three custom colorways (red/white, black, gold), the sneaker boasts hidden luxury. The red/white and black Supreme Uptempo nike comes complete with a nubuck upper and custom leather lettering. Meanwhile, the metallic gold Uptempo boasts a sleek all-leather upper. Of course, one cant ignore the classic three Air-sole units and elastic gores adorning the shoe.
