Karl Lagerfeld Reveals Chanel Fall 15 Haute Couture during Paris Couture Week.
Set in a grand, casino, empty and ominous until several of Karl Lagerfeld’s muses: Lara Stone, Rita Ora, Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore among others, took their seats at the vacant roulette tables, all dressed in outfits Lagerfeld made especially for them.
Usually when watching any of Chanel’s Haute Couture shows, the message Lagerfeld wants to get across seems to get lost in the midst of him poking fun at a lot of controversial topics, but this time, it struck the audience like a nail hitting their teeth. Gambling, implying the state of the world’s money market and also to simply reflect how Lagerfeld gambles with fashion. “I gamble with collections more than ever,” he admitted. “I’m always telling myself: ‘You can do better. You’re lazy. You can make an effort.’ I never get any satisfaction from what I’m doing, I do it for the doing, not the having done.”
The collection had a sort of Terminator and Ex Mechanica twist to it, showing a famous staple jacket in the house of Chanel during the 20th century, and interpreting it so that it translates to today’s day and age. Silhouettes were boxy and clean cut, as if being sliced with a laser beam. The same can also be said about the model’s hair and makeup and the perfect angular shape in the shoes. Precise and pristine. Lagerfeld also wanted to experiment with the shoulders, showing emphasis without the use of shoulder pads, and succeeded giving the garments a militant vibe, that was almost uncomfortable to look at. The detailing brought back some of the technique that Chanel herself used to set herself apart from the rest when she first emerged as a designer, the quilting and the hand beading on hemlines. It’s like what they say in fashion, you have to go back to go forward.
