Maison Margiela Couture Spring 2017 by John Galliano, Paris
John Galliano’s affinity for the grandiose has defined his career. Years after a very public backlash regarding reported Anti-Sematic comments, the designer seems to have once again found his sweet spot. Galliano had many things to say during his Maison Margiela Couture Spring 2017 showing. However, this time, the designer made his biggest statements through his garments. In addition to the usual craftsmanship of couture, Galliano took things a bit further encoding cryptic messages into his designs. Take for example, the beautiful transparent jacket with stitching made to look like a face with a rainbow tongue sticking out. Utilizing strategic cut-outs, manipulated tulle and other fabrics, the designer fashioned a collection of faces on several garments and headpieces. Galliano, didn’t rely solely on theatrics, beautiful gowns and hats made quit the statement on their own. Overall the collection felt modern and incredibly sincere.
