J.W. Anderson Spring Summer 2017. J.W. Anderson Debuts a Mens Collection focused on Royalty.
J.W. Anderson revealed a strong Le Petit Prince influence in his SS17 collection. A famed classic commonly read as a child evidently resonated with the designer, as he affirmed it to be the strongest inspiration for the latest men’s collection. As if rediscovering childhood, Anderson dressed the models in broken, beaded crowns, oversized and undersized garments, aviator goggles, jumpsuits resembling onesies and oversized sleeves that dusted the floor. The JW Anderson Mens Spring Summer 2017 collection was whimsical and childlike with a dress up feel. The models walked through a maze of corridor-like catwalks set to a slightly eerie soundtrack that made for a truly intriguing show. Â Anderson shared with Vogue, “It’s not about being nostalgic, it’s about being childlike. It’s like when a kid looks at influences; how they reinterpret those influences.”
The Prince of London fashion himself walked an army of princes down his runway in an effort to evoke the playful creative in all of us. With a lesser focus on that of an actual prince and a greater focus on the youthful fervor of the collection, it becomes quite evident that Anderson is simply encouraging the experimentation and fearlessness. A fleeting quality of adulthood, commonly possessed by young ones, and applying that same attitude to fashion.
In the collection Anderson featured plaid shirtings with quilted bibs. Fluid culottes in solids and prints were styled in nearly every look. Oversized, whimsical sweaters wore sleeves that skimmed the floor. The jumpsuits were quite utilitarian in their nature. Oversized button down tops emerged in ombre dye patterns. Captivating abstract prints dressed most styles while mixing printed puzzle pieces, plaids and painterly prints. The puzzle prints were repeated consecutively throughout the collection hinting at a deeper connectivity and meaning. A repeated medallion print was also featured on several tops and bottoms. A bomber jacket was styled with added denim fabric to achieve longer lengths and drama. An oversized plaid tank appeared to function as a dress.
The collection was nothing less than a masterpiece of color and print. While the styling may have appeared confusing and not all that practical, the collection offered a surplus of sensational moments.  Separating J.W. Anderson’s sense of storytelling and everyday style takes an editor’s eye. From our view, it is apparent that Anderson designed a collection filled with wearables pieces for the fearless.
