Julien MacDonald Fall 2017 Looks a Lot Like Givenchy and Maybe it is
At first glance of the Julien MacDonald Fall 2017 collection, I noticed something very familiar. Perhaps it was the skin tight embellished gowns or the streetwear inspired mens pieces. I immediately thought, this looks a lot like Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy. However, Julien MacDonald is certainly no copycat. Sorry, no Alexander Wang vs Philipp Plein controversy on this one. In fact, Julien MacDonald ruled the runways of Givenchy long before Tisci. Chosen as the successor to the late Alexander McQueen, MacDonald was artistic director of women’s ready to wear and haute couture at Givenchy up until Riccardo Tisci’s arrival in 2015.
Now back to the collection. It was confident, sleek, sexy and equal parts urban and Rock-and-roll. As usual, the designer focused on statement making evening wear. MacDonald’s women’s offering ranges from blinged out bodysuits to chain link gowns and mini-dresses. For the Julien MacDonald mens line, the message is very much the same, 100% badass. We see embellished jackets and skinny trousers each in a palette of black. In all the collection possess an edgy, rebellious vibe where streetwear and couture form a badass biker gang.
