Jason Wu X FILA SS16: A Sportswear Meets Fashion Collaboration

Jason Wu X Fila: Taiwanese-Canadian Designer Jason Wu Teams up with Vintage Sportswear Brand Fila for a Fashion Forward Collaboration.

Italian brand since 1973, FILA is proving its relevance in today’s arena of fashion competitors by participating in a new collaboration with designer Jason Wu. The collection Jason Wu x FILA was designed for the Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The collection is an effort of brand resurgence, a strategic boost for the company. In doing so, FILA is stepping back into the game with a notable collaboration with a praised designer.

The collection was presented in the form of a fashion show in Hong Kong late last year. The designs exemplified the merging of fashion and function. An activewear brand merging with a sportswear designer was met to create a collection of dynamic Athleisurewear. The strong tennis heritage of FILA was evidently present, while introducing reworked classics with fashion. The color palette of the collection spoke strongly to the brand identity of FILA. The runway styling of the collaboration was perhaps representative of the Asian market where the show was held.

The combination of the two houses of FILA and Jason Wu produced a series of styles including a deep blue trench coat and graphic newsprint tees. A modern take on the zipped half turtleneck tennis tee was styled with a center zip a-line skirt color blocked and news printed. A sleek tennis dress in bicolor blocking sported a vertical center zip. Similarly, half turtleneck, a-line tennis dress featured bold, pigmented colors and color blocked printing. Classic FILA baseball caps were included in the collection.

The collection was a collision of color blocks and a vision of modernity. The designs appeared vivid, fresh and reinterpreted. This action in collaborating spoke loudly to not only the efforts of FILA in its initiative to resurge its relevance, but also the advancing importance of marketing through collaborations for the growth of companies in today’s business of fashion.
