J.W. Anderson FW16: J.W. Anderson Proves That There Is Always AÂ Chance To Create AÂ ‘Fashion’s Firsts.’
We all marked our calendars in confusion and anxiety for the debut of J.W. Anderson Fall 2016 collection. Following a press announcement last week that he would be teaming up with the popular gay social networking and dating app Grindr to broadcast live feed from the runway show in London, may found themselves fiddling their thumbs for a variety of reasons.
Grindr reportedly has over 7 million users, so theoretically, this was a strategic campaign for Anderson . The very thought of a fashion label teaming up with a gay dating app synonymously known for hookups rather than certainly piqued our interests and reminds us of the old adage that sex does sell. Anderson however, sees the partnership a bit differently as he shares: I don’t see the difference between a dating app and Instagram”
The underlying motif of the collection explored the pace of fashion both as it exists today and as it will in the future. Seen quite visibly on the illuminated snails prints on coats that casually sliding across the runway, Anderson also expanded upon his idea utilizing silhouette. Sophisticated layering exposed bare chested models draped in outerwear causing the eye to travel down to an even more sensational textile, skin peeking through a delicate perforated trousers.
Futuristic motifs continued as we saw playful ray-gun and rabbit prints. Cloud shaped pockets strategically placed on jackets gave moments of lightness, causing the garment to float above the runway. Added elements included the S&M studded chokers, studded shirt collars, and bounded wrists on the sweaters.
J.W. Anderson reminds us that he’s not afraid to make bold moves on and off the runway. He’s the first designer to broadcast a runway show on a dating app, and we can definitely see this trend having more traction than we thought. Let’s see which designer will be first to follow in Anderson’s footsteps.
