Model of the Moment, Irina Shayk Bares it All in a Steamy September Cover Story for GQ Italia.
Russian model Irina Shayk took to the cover of GQ Italia for the September issue. The model was photographed nude in a series of black and white, sultry photographs, shot by photographer Mario Sorrenti. Shayk who is credited for her forceful sex appeal and captivating presence, was in her natural element in this editorial, producing a beautiful series of dynamic photographs.
For GQ’s September feature, the Russian model who is a bona fide ‘Givenchy Girl,’ starring in a series of campaigns for the fashion brand, was interviewed by none other than Givenchy’s creative designer himself, Riccardo Tisci. Tisci praised Shayk in an intro to the interview stating, “Irina is a sexual animal. She’s fearless. That’s the kind of woman she is: an ultra-glam sex symbol, brimming with power and intelligence. I can see why she is a fantasy for men: she seems almost unreal, like a nymph from a dream.” Tisci applauded the professional character of Irina Shayk, the model who is the first to arrive on set and the last to leave. The model who is full of energy and puts forth such energy and animation in all that she does.
In the raw, candid interview, Tisci questioned Shayk on her childhood in Russia, where Shayk was born and raised in a small, unknown village. Her childhood, seemingly normal for the modern day bombshell, was spent spending time in the garage with her father repairing cars, working in the garden with her mother and sister, collecting mushrooms in the forest with her family, and long road trips to visit her grandmother in the village. She confessed her wavering self esteem in that, “… I didn’t even think I was especially pretty. At 14, I’d have given my left arm to be a boy: I thought I was horrible, and that no-one would ever find me attractive.”
However, it was what was said later in the interview that expectedly created digital and social shock waves. In one question, the Givenchy creative director asked if Shayk had ever been attracted to the opposite sex as she is often working with beautiful models. Shayk replied bluntly, “No way. I’m Russian. I’m into men, diamonds and caviar.” This definite sense of sexuality and preference in a current society where it seems more blurred and confused proved quite shocking to media outlets and GQ readers. But perhaps it is exactly for this reason that Irina Shayk has become one of the greatest sex symbols of this generation: her unapologetic, unwavering stance to remain confidently true to herself.
