Hood By Air Debuts a Provocative Spring Summer 2017 Collection during New York Fashion Week.
Shayne Oliver’s emphatic Hood By Air brand built a reputation quickly. Launched in 2012, the outspoken brand became a cult favorite of underground club kids, fashion editors, and entertainers like ASAP Rocky and Rihanna. How did he do it? The Hood By Air formula is a careful mix of raw street style references, sexuality, and a new type of philosophy. For the brand’s SS/17 collection, Oliver delves deeper into his intimate construct. Along the way, we uncover brazen notions of gender fluidity and the messages left behind.
Sexual undertones are a hallmark of the Hood By Air aesthetic and this latest collection is certainly not prudent. How could it be with Pornhub as a sponsor. Aside from the obligatory graphic sponsored merch (look 32 featured a Pornhub tank top) the collection offered an intelligent mix of cryptic messaging. The words “Wench” and “Hustler” were strewn across tops. Flashes of skin peeked from beneath oversized pants and open trench coats.
Aside from the overtly provocative, the collection spoke volumes with signature HBA sensibility. Graphic logos appeared on tshirts and the styling had an acute direction. Oliver found inspiration in the formality of Wall Street Suiting. The collection offered oversized suit pants with zippers and shirting that hung around the neck, like a necklace.
So far Oliver has proven to be a great storyteller. The narrative we’ve found is very personal – because it’s about each of us. It’s about boundaries.
