Designer Hedi Slimane and his Shocking Exit from Saint Laurent
Hedi Slimane exits Yves Saint Laurent after a seemingly successful 4 year stint as Creative Director of the high profile brand. Yves Saint Laurent announced the shocking news via a press release. “At the end of a four year mission which has led to the complete repositioning of the brand, Masion Yves Saint Laurent announces the departure of Hedi Simane.”
Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO and owner of Kering shares similar thoughts on the departure of Slimane. “What Yves Saint Laurent has achieved over the past four years represents a unique chapter in the history of the house. I am very grateful to Hedi Slimane, and the whole Yves Saint Laurent team, for having set the path that the house has successfully embraced, and which will grant longevity to this legendary brand,” he shared.
The Rise of Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent
Hedi Slimane was named Creative Director of the brand while it was still known as Yves Saint Laurent back in 2012. After Kering, the owner of Saint Laurent, changed the name, they also encouraged Slimane to change the brand’s aesthetic. Soon after, Saint Laurent’s new Slimane guided rock and roll motif emerged. Every facet of the Saint Laurent brand seemed to have Slimane’s signature motif. From sleek ad campaigns, photographed by Slimane himself, to new style classics such as the Saint Laurent black suede Chelsea boot, the designer was transforming the brand.
Soon after his appointment, Hedi Slimane relocated to L.A. to escape the craziness of Paris and daunting press interviews. There he seemed to find a new sense of inspiration. Saint Laurent shops became filled with youth culture: leather jackets, studded apparel, seamless slip dresses, and festival ready attire. All seemed to be picture perfect for Hedi Slimane at Yves Saint Laurent. What went wrong?
Trouble in the YSL Hedi Slimane Paradise
Rumors soon began to circulate that Anthony Vaccerello would replace Slimane. The rumors were strengthened further following an announcement of Vaccerello’s departure from VERSUS VERSACE. Saint Laurent officially confirmed his hire soon after.
The Belgian-Italian fashion designer took over Versus in 2015 after successful tenures at Jonathan Anderson and Christopher Kane. Vaccerello seems to already have a grasp of the Saint Laurent aesthetic. During his time at Versus, we saw sexy, youthful motifs including plenty of leather ensembles and mini-skirts. Vaccerello has also proven to possess some serious busy savvy introducing ready-to-buy to Versus fashion shows. Donatella Versace shares a few words on Vaccerello’s new post.”While I’m sad to see him leave the Versace family, I wish Anthony tremendous success with his next chapter.”
With the announcement of Hedi Slimane’s depature and Anthony Vaccerello’s subsequent appointment, all eyes are on Yves Saint Laurent. What will become of the cool kids motif that Hedi Slimane so skillfully constructed? As always with fashion, only time will tell.
