Guess Originals X ASAP Rocky: Guess Releases New Collection by Style Heavy Hitter A$AP Rocky
When most think of Hiphop and fashion collaboration, one name comes to mind, Kanye West. However it looks like another well versed, name dropping artist may be giving Yeezy a run for the throne. Say hello, or rather, what’s up to our favorite Pretty Boy Flacko; A$AP Rocky as he teams up with Guess founder Paul Marciano on the release of an exciting new collection, ‘Guess Originals x A$AP Rocky.’
The young style maven has been on the Radar of a host of fashion brands from the onset of his chart topping lyrical and style career. He’s collaborated with Salvatore Ferragamo, Raf Simons, Jeremy Scott, and streetwear label Black Scale so far and is showing no signs of slowing down. ASAP’s latest collaboration seems to be his most personal one yet, with the artist appearing to be in the driver’s seat in almost every aspect of the venture.
While Guess and Hip hop may seem like an odd collaboration today, ASAP reminds us that the brand has some serious street cred as he shares the following statement,“I actually looked into the archives just to see what was available and after that my main focus was silhouettes and reconfigurations, because I didn’t want it to fit exactly like those jeans back then, when they were so big and baggy. I wanted to give kids today knowledge of what Guess meant to Hip Hop and the urban community in the nineties and late eighties. From the drug dealer on the corner with the t-shirt, the rapper Nas saying ‘When I get dressed, it’s nothing less than Guess’ and Tupac in the movie Juice.”
ASAP Rocky is proving to be an artist in every since of the word. Leading his very own artistic collective, AWGE, ASAP is living the image that he raps about. In celebration of the debut collection, the artists put his talents on display as Guess partnered with his agency,AWGE, to create a experimental interactive installation in downtown Manhattan. Transforming the basement space of 168 Bowery into a time warp straight out of the 90s complete with Nintendo consoles, nostalgic arcade games, and stacks of gleaming cd towers; the brand calls out the grungy and crazed teenage angst in us all.
