Karl Lagerfeld Presents Fendi Couture Fall 2016 Collection in Rome.
Last July, Fendi celebrated a major anniversary: the 50th anniversary of Karl Lagerfeld as Creative Director for the Italian fashion house. In 1965 Lagerfeld joined Fendi as the Creative Director for Fur and Women Ready-to-Wear, and has remained an absolutely critical and instrumental component of Fendi since. This July, Fendi celebrated a different anniversary: that of the 90th year milestone of the Roman luxury house.
Fendi debuted their Fall 2016 couture collection in Rome, at the Trevi Fountain. Just 24 hours before the show, Fendi received clearance from the mayor of Rome to construct a transparent runway built atop the fountains base. In a majestic display, set to a illuminating backdrop of the grand Trevi Fountain against the dark, Roman sky.
The said starting point of inspiration for the haute fourrure collection was a 1914 book of fairytales, East of the Sun and Wet of the Moon. It was such northern fairytales that brought a sense of nostalgia to Lagerfeld, in a reminder of his childhood. An unusual nostalgic tone for Karl Lagerfeld, the collection show was called Legends and Fairytales, as explained the collection is a rarity.
The collection designs were richly decorated with floral embroideries, appliqués, textured brocades and exquisite fur. The fur in particular reached new levels of design aesthetic and detail that succeeded in advancing Fendi amongst all other luxury fashion houses, as done continuously with each season’s show. Ornate pouches functioned as handbags; ankle boots proved fitted and versatile and fairytale prints graced garments in both subtle and unsubtle fashions. Kimono influenced silhouettes were designed in rich fur and varying fabrics.
Model Kendall Jenner opened the haute fourrure show, whilst Bella Hadid closed the collection presentation and led the finale walk. The show concluded with a final, dramatic stance of the collection in its entirety as the models stood like statues in the Trevi Fountain. Karl Lagerfeld and Sylvia Fendi walked the translucent runway as praise from the audience initiated. Karl Lagerfeld took a bow and threw a single coin over his head and into the Fontana di Trevi, closing the final scene of this Roman fairytale.
