Marissa Webb Fall Winter 2016: Designer Marissa Webb Presents her Latest Collection at New York Fashion Week.
With over a decade at contemporary retailer J.Crew and a subsequent high profile position as Creative Director at Banana Republic, designer Marissa Webb has spent most of her career creating strong design concepts for two of the world’s most recognizable brands. For Fall Winter 2016, Webb presents her first collection since scaling back her position at Banana Republic. With a seemingly newfound sense of freedom, Webb offers a glimpse of what’s to come of her eponymous label.
The Marissa Webb Fall Winter 2016 collection was a  sort of coming out party for the veteran designer. As there was no need to reinvent herself, Webb knows very well what her brand is, she instead opted for a discourse on the elements of her signature aesthetic. The collection was rooted in the idea of subtle power dressing. A blend of soft, feminine notes reinvented themselves alongside traditionally masculine silhouettes, creating a sense of confidence that was modern yet classic. Suiting , normally cut long and narrow was instead cropped and widened, while light evening and party dresses moved across the runway with an ease that made the eye dance.
Utilizing a color palette of mostly black, gray, and white, the collection evoked an iconic, transitional feel. Strong masculine prints including pinstripe, chalkstripe, and windowpane appeared strategically, while lighter hues appeared sparingly, including a brilliant golden yellow appearing near the end of the show giving way to an unapologetic feminine sensibility.
“I thought I would have a little bit of breathing room, but I didn’t really,” Webb shared with Vogue. “Once I get invested in something, I really get invested, so my schedule filled up just as fast.” Perhaps it was her hard lessons learned during here time championing international fashion operations or simply her relentlessness for impeccable execution. Whatever the case, Webb is proving to be one of the most promising American fashion designers of the moment. It’ll be interesting to watch as the skilled designer and businesswoman continues to craft her brand message. Will it follow in the footsteps of her past retail employers, or will Webb opt for something more editorial. Only time will tell and we’ll certainly be watching.
