Facetasm Spring Summer 2017: Hiromichi Ochiai Presents a SS17 Collection Inspired by Tokyo Street Style during Paris Fashion Week.
Designer Hiromichi Ochiai is making serious waves in the world of menswear with his street style focused brand, Facetasm. Just under a decade old, the brand has received several notable nods as of late. Ochiai was named a finalist for the LVMH 2016 prize and before that he was selected by Giorgio Armani to debut his collection at Milano Moda Uomo. His latest collection, Facetasm Spring Summer 2017, is his first time showing in Paris. For the occasion, the Japanese designer took inspiration from Tokyo, and presented a collection with innovation and a youthful, urban swagger.
“I always get inspiration from Tokyo,” Ochiai said backstage before the show. “I mix high-end fashion with street-youth culture.” The designer’s SS17 collection was filled with hints of athleticism and an intriguing sense of gender fluidity. He opened the show with dress-like, pinstriped vests that fell just above the knee. Accompanying the look were branded “Facetasm” tube socks and sneakers. Ochiai also experimented with layering. The lineup featured distressed leather jackets, bombers, and even shearling tied at the waist. Beneath the outerwear layer, lighter pieces such as mesh polyester tops, sports jerseys and denim added interest. Other collection motifs featured sweaters layered on top of shirts. Like the mis-matched sweater over the sheer-silk, checkered fabric paired with jeans in look 10 or the blue gingham button-up shirt layered underneath a sweatshirt and distressed leather jacket, paired with tack pants in look 19. Ochai’s use of layering created an exciting sense of depth showcasing the versatility of the collection.
The collection was also abundant in eye catching colors and prints. Moments of visual stimulation like the bright, in-your-face yellow, or that red floral print, camouflage, and enlarged checker prints assured that there wasn’t a lackluster moment. Ochiai also kept us on our toes with his use of a mis-matched construction technique. The eyes were made to dance as one sleeve on a bomber jacket was black, while the other has red floral print. Further exploration saw a sport sweatshirt looking as though it consists of three different sport teams, ripped and patched together as one.
Ochiai may not have been the winner of this year’s LVMH prize, but this latest collection exemplifies what got him the attention. With a focus on street style and youth culture Facetasm is a brand that represents the now of fashion. It’ll be interesting to watch how the designer continues to mold the brand as the Seasons trends fade and re-emerge.
