Dolce and Gabbana Present Autumn/Winter 2016 Alta Moda Collection in the City of Naples in Honor of Sophia Loren.
Dolce & Gabbana took to the streets of Naples, Italy for their Alta Moda 2016 collection. The ancient, historic city of Napoli laid as backdrop to the eccentric couture collection of Dolce & Gabbana in part of its tribute to the iconic, Sophia Loren. Via San Gregorio Armeno set as the runway for Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda collection. Locals curiously watched from balcony windows and storefronts. The audience erupted into cheer with the entrance of Sophia Loren, shouting her name along the likes of “Ti amo!” and “Bellissima!” The collection in fact proved to entirely center itself on the great, Sophia Loren.
“We came to Napoli because of Sophia Loren,” explained Domenico Dolce. “She’s the inspiration for this whole collection. Each summer, it’s a different city we take inspiration from. They asked her what city. She wanted Napoli.” The iconic actress observed the show from a gold and red velvet throne, as each model nodded or bowed towards her upon passing. The collection dresses were taken from and inspired by Sophia’s iconic film roles and on-screen stylings.
Dolce & Gabbana walked 99 Alta Moda looks down the runway of Via San Gregorio Armeno. Each look diverse from the other, but with a common thread of Italian heritage. As with every Alta Moda collection, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana spared no expense in manifesting their lavish imaginative into physical design. The baroque city of Naples complimented the strong, baroque designs of the collection. Homage was made to Loren’s film looks, and references were made to high Catholicism. A blue satin shirt mirrored the designs of an Italian football jersey, with Sophia scripted across the front, and Maradona 10 written on the back. Classic red, restaurant tablecloth patterns were used in the construction of off the shoulder blouses. Flower printings and appliques were repeatedly featured, as to reflect Loren’s wild appreciation for roses.
The show resembled much that of a Napolitano street festival, and effortlessly complimented the Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2016 campaign featuring local civilians and models clad in Dolce & Gabbana, among the streets of Naples. In paying further homage to the city of Naples, Stefano Gabbana showed off an Alta Moda collection embellished piece with the word “Napoli” on the front. He laughed greatly as he imaginatively exclaimed, “You’ll be able to buy these looks in a few days on the market streets of Naples.”
