Craig Green Spring Summer 2017: Menswear Designer Craig Green Debuts Spring 2017 Collection at London Fashion Week.
Craig Green’s eponymous label is nearing its three year anniversary and is consistently piquing attention as one of the most anticipated shows of the London Men’s Fashion Week Season. What is it about Green’s label that has us buzzing? Perhaps its the designer’s signature tailoring. A mix of slim tailored silhouettes and unconventional flowing hemlines. Whatever it is, we’re certain of one thing, Craig Green knows how tell a story. This season, the designer takes a political route. Green’s SS17 collection references flags and their symbolic abilities. Utilizing the diversity of country flags and their bold, saturated colors, Green constructs his very own united front. Green shared a few words backstage with WWD before the show,”The whole collection was initially based around a Scout Scarf, that symbolism of belonging to something.”
This collection proved to be a pivotal moment in Green’s young design career. The designer demonstrated his ability to evolve, presenting new tailoring methods, color palettes, and an innovative understanding of pattern. Green’s collection challenged the British aspect of menswear. He reinterpreted the familiar, creating new more interesting silhouettes. Outerwear was less tailored and more deconstructed. Trousers were wide-legged and even backless. We saw quilted jackets with Moorish design influences.
Green’s collection isn’t designed for the average man. The Craig Green man is someone more progressive. How else does one integrate slits of asymmetrical cut fabric revealing skin on the arms, legs, and torso? It’s hard to picture the right occasion for the attire and that’s likely how Green meant it be. The designer’s collection pieces are meant to be mixed, matched and reinterpreted. With an acute, editorial eye, Green continues to stray left from the norm of traditional menswear.
