Karl Lagerfeld Debuts a Colorful, Tech Inspired Chanel Spring Summer 2017 Collection in Paris.
Chanel represents the epitome of ingenuity that is Karl Lagerfeld. Each Season the veteran designer finds a way to reinterpret the classic lineup of Chanel tweed blazers, skirts, and trousers into something fascinating. For this year’s affair, Lagerfeld explores the influence of technology through the guise of fashion and vice versa.
The runway depicted a giant mini frame computer complete with color coded wiring. The setting was a departure from the designer’s usual displays of the Baroque and Romantic. Opening the show were two models suited up in robotic looking helmets that completely covered the face. We all looked onwards trying to decipher exactly what Lagerfeld was saying.
“Intimate technology.” That’s the terminology Lagerfeld used to describe his latest collection. The motif proved to be literal and experimental. Mixed in with the expected Chanel fabrics, were a collection of psychedelic, sometimes dizzying prints. We’re talking about 90s music synth waves and amoeba like Windows screen savers. Almost every look was complete with a matching printed hat styled backwards, and to the side.
Overall, the collection was lighter and more youthful than what we expect from Chanel. We dare to even call it eclectic and vintage feeling. There were a few trends at play on the runway. We saw glimpses of RTW lingerie, ath-leisure and 90s street style. Silk slips fluttered beneath skirts, lace was abundant, and each look served a double dose of swagger.
Chanel is a brand that doesn’t have to take risks, it’s built upon longstanding classics. However, nothing involving Karl Lagerfeld is without change. So what exactly is the designer saying about this new era of fashion? It’s apparent that technology is becoming increasingly unavoidable. So much so that it has become a part of us. Yes, that’s it. Intimate technology.
