Gigi Hadid Embraces her Muslim Ethnicity for Vogue Arabia

Gigi Hadid Embraces her Rich, Muslim Ethnicity for the Debut Issue of Vogue Arabia

Model Gigi Hadid may already have 16 Vogue covers, but her latest one may just trump them all. Embracing her rich, blended Nationality Gigi Hadid stars on the first issue of Vogue Arabia. Lensed by duo Inez & Vinoodh, Gigi completely commits to showcasing Middle Eastern beauty. Styled in a dramatic, crystal encrusted Brandon Maxwell veil, the half-Palestinian model serves up cinematic front and back cover image. The editorial drama continues inside the issue as Gigi is shown wearing a colorful hijab accented with vibrant makeup. Gigi Hadid’s ethnicity is something that the she routinely shares with the world. The 23-year-old model’s passion has even led her to join Anti-Trump rallies and protests alongside Bella Hadid. Following the cover release, Gigi reflects on the moment via Instagram. She writes, “Being half-Palestinian, it means the world to me to be on the first-ever cover(s) of Vogue Arabia.” Adding, “I hope that this magazine will show another layer of the fashion industry’s desire to continue to accept, celebrate, and incorporate all people and customs.”
However, Gigi Hadid’s ethnically inspired cover hasn’t been a hit with all. Crossing the line into cultural appropriation is always a risk in fashion. Though, I don’t think that’s the case here. Others disagree, voicing that Gigi Hadid’s hijab cover is simply a fashion pr stunt. I suppose, there’s simply no right answer when it comes to fashion and politics.
