Who’s a Supermodel? Meet the Top Supermodels of 2016

Supermodel or Just Super Popular? These are the Top Supermodels of 2016

2016 was a controversial year for the term ‘supermodel’. With a legion of savvy Instagirls like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid taking over catwalks and magazines, several young models seemed to skyrocket to stardom overnight. But does having 1 million + Instagram followers make one a top supermodel? Shockingly, Several veteran supermodels answered the question with a resounding NO. Rebecca Romijn was fairly blunt with her opinion. “It is frustrating,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I know that a lot of people — legitimate fashion people — can’t stand it. Hate that these, you know, social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion. They are not true supermodels. Veteran supermodel Naomi Campbell shared similar sentiments on The Meredith Vieira Show last year. “I mean, good luck to them,” she said. “I just feel like my generation of women — like Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Claudia — we had to earn our stripes and take our stepping stones to get to where we have gotten. I kind of feel like, ‘My God, we’ve worked so hard, and we are still working at it.’ And then it just comes like that for them, but I sometimes believe easy come, easy go.” The most controversial statement of all came from Stephanie Seymour. “They are completely different than we were. Supermodels are sort of the thing of the past. They deserve their own title. [Kendall and Gigi] are beautiful girls, and I support all of them, but they need their own title. Seymour was even later rumored to have dubbed the crew, “Bitches of the moment!”, in an unofficial statement. Magazines and designers seem to answer differently, however, booking non-stop covers, campaigns and runway appearances for the so-called new era of models. Perhaps it’s simply business or maybe these women just have what it takes to sell to the current generation of consumers? No matter what side of the debate you stand these hybrid supermodel/influencers have unprecedented control over the media. Who are the top new supermodels of the moment?
