Visvim Mens Spring Summer 2017: Hiroki Nakamura Presents A Collection Filled with Classic Americana References.
Visvim is a brand that gathers inspiration from cultures and the interconnectedness between them. Designer duo Hiroki Nakamura and wife Kelsi are particular fascinated with a certain Western sensibility. Visions of a slower, simpler life where what you wear is a uniform are a signature of the brand. For the Visvim Spring Summer 2017 collection, Nakamura focuses our attention on American fashion.
For Spring, the pair sent down a slew of agrarian-goes- youthful looks that wore an effortless charm. The models themselves, Au Naturel, looked like they had freshly rolled out of bed. Cowboy hats galore were styled with boot-cut jeans and vintage print tees. The acutely Japanese inspired attention-to-detail was seen throughout the collection. From the freshness of a basic white tee and the oriental lining of a utilitarian navy jacket, the collection was balanced meticulously.
Minimalism emerged in the form of a crisp white kimono. The womenswear looks were especially delectable- a silky bomber jacket in midnight blue was a trendy addition to the selection. We also noted a 50’s style theme that was exuded through sailor style silhouettes and an adorable signature bolt print. In the age of edgy street-wear brands dominating the youth’s fetish, Visvim takes an un-prodded path for the lovers of vintage and simplicity.
The Japanese have nurtured a historical fascination for classic Americana over the years. The two countries have engaged in a constant conversation that has produced brands and styles that today have international recognition and referential power. Classic examples include the adoption of the Ivy League style by Japan’s Miyuki tribe in the 1960’s or America’s love for unique Japanese Selvedge Denim at the zenith of Levi’s. The list is endless and intriguing. Tokyo-based brand Visvim feeds into this ideology, showcasing a renewed version of American heritage every Season. Think washed-out graphic tees and pleated trousers.
The brand functions on the allied efforts of Hiroki Nakamura and his wife Kelsi who deftly fuse concepts from Americana with traditional Japanese silhouettes. Past collections have included Navajo style blanket jackets and gingham prairie skirts speckled amongst Kimonos and Taiwanese tribal jackets. It’s an in intelligent cocktail of oriental meets occidental.
