We explore the Luxe Style of Emerging Designer Ryan Roche in Our Latest Designer Spotlight.
Ryan Roche would put your grandma’s slouchy sweater to shame, she can clearly be hailed as the seamstress of luxe knitwear. The design maven native to New York previously dabbled in kidswear before launching her womenswear label in 2011. Her sumptuous creations have been clad by the likes of Julianne Moore, Kendall Jenner and Solange Knowles.
Despite all the media appreciation, 38 year old Roche refuses to subscribe to the break-neck pace and pressures designers today work under. She lives in a 17th Century stone house in Rhine Cliff wth her family and dogs, tucked away from the mayhem of the city and designs on her own watch. The serenity of her surroundings evidently prevails in her clothing especially though the subdued colours. A nominee of the Vogue Fashion Fund in 2015, Roche has been nominated for the prestigious CFDA Swarowski Award for women this year, her garments are also sold at retail behemoths such as Barney’s & Colette.
For Fall/Winter 2016 the designer displayed a heartwarming show. Her own children accompanied by their peers paid a tribute to David Bowie by singing to his iconic tunes while dressed in her cashmere splendour. This comes as no surprise. Roche doesn’t just run a label, she’s a full time mom who champions sustainability. The designer personally works with weavers from Nepalese garment factories ensuring an ethical work environment. Roche is known for her buttery selection of knits that have an almost monastic aura, they’re usually found in soothing shades of blush, fawn and caramel.
She doesn’t make her work dowdy. Instead, Roche has chosen to infuse a sense of sensuousness in her clothes while maintaining a minimalist appeal. She does so through a plunging back on an oversized sweater or an exposed shoulder on a fluid jumpsuit.
This time, on the runway, she did not disappoint either, a delicate dress in dusty rose was enveloped by a textured coat in the same shade that evoked a timeless romanticism. She even played with her colours by inserting heady shades of oxblood and chocolatey tan into an otherwise pastel palette. The twist of a sash over a rich ribbed turtle neck or the demure quality of a tasselled shawl-these are the elements that truly make Roche’s offerings lustworthy. Her quintessentially feminine aesthetic and choice of delectable fabrics beckon you to touch her clothes, to taste them.
