Thom Browne Resort 2017: Color Play

Thom Browne Resort 2017: Recent CFDA Award Winner Thom Browne Gets Playful in his Resort 2017 Collection.

What’s pink and yellow, and tailored all over? Thom Browne’s Resort 2017 Collection. Making menswear feminine, and womenswear child-like via fantastical blazers, pristine pleated skirts, mismatched socks, and American sportswear – you’ll be wondering if you fell down the rabbit hole too. And why would the recent 2016 CFDA Menswear Design winner stray from his blacks, grays, and off-white hues to a new color palette of playful pastels?

Thom Browne is perhaps known best for his forays into suiting. The designer’s exquisite understanding of craftsmanship coupled with impeccable precision has developed into a true hallmark of each collection. And if the Resort 2017 Collection didn’t surpass his previously stamped reputation in the world of fashion and technical design, then Coco didn’t sell perfume, Louis Vuitton never made a handbag, and Diane von Furstenberg never created a wrap dress. The collection is stunning, it’s shocking, it’s vibrant, and it’s silly. From a seemingly perfectly fitted blazer with an extra sleeve dangling down a model’s spine, to a full length trench coat on the left side of a model’s body that contrasted sharply with a woman’s waist-length jacket constructed on the right side of her body, Thom Browne kicked aside all mundaneness and expectation that sides against the classic suit. The playfulness in crafty design, and creativity was furthered by color blocking techniques within individual pieces, that subtly merged, creating larger, more grand patterns, colliding with some other proportion of the look. At no point, could the viewers eyes focus on one particular point – true sensory stimulation.

Thom Browne’s latest collection was an acute mix of editorial innovation and retail savvy. His signature tailored suits remained a staple, craftsmanship superseded that of collections past and he cultivated a fresh wave of awe-inspiring designs that left a faint smirk across every face. Browne shared with WWD that his goal for his Resort 2017 Collection was to make everyone smile; and we must admit we’re still smiling.
