Fashion Week: Marc Jacobs FW2016 New York Fashion Week

Marc Jacobs Fall Winter 2016: Jacobs’ Stuns with a Cinematic Fall-Winter 2016 Collection Show

In what seems to be yet another season of cookie-cutter runway shows and faux-edgy pieces, Marc Jacobs brings back the true essence of fashion show production. With looks spanning the gamut, from garish to grandiose, Jacobs invites us in for a look into both the beautiful and the grotesque aesthetics of the Marc Jacobs brand.

Bringing out his inner Tim Burton with hints of macabre in both beauty and textile; the models looked scary, scary good. We knew we were in for a show the second the first model set foot on the the pearly white runway, wearing foot-high platform boots, a crinoline caged skirt, a shrunken sweatshirt, accompanied by an exaggerated finger wave hairstyle and dark Gothic eye makeup and lipstick. All 66 of the looks were embellished from head to toe. Accents including boule effects in the silhouette of cats, spiderweb patches, cats and rats prints, doily-like crocheted “webs” atop jackets and sweaters, and leather skirts with floral cut-outs added a dark, ominous aesthetic to the collection.

Jacobs was masterful in his use of textile to convey the weight of emotion. Heavy fabrics including wool and cashmere were tailored into oversized sweaters and coats, while gothic inspired fabrics like black acid wash denim and leather added dimension to silhouettes. The color palette was predominantly black, accented with a careful selection of Romantic hues and prints creating moments of intrigue in each garment.

The designer had a few dark muses for his Fall Winter 2016 collection including  Lydia from Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, Lady Gaga (who actually made an appearance on Jacobs’ runway), and other “ghouls and goths of New York City”.

In the midst of a chilling New York Fashion Week full of long treks and an endless schedule of events, it’s fashion shows like this that make it all worth while. Thank you Marc Jacobs!
