Chromat Fall Winter 2016:Chromat Embraces Technology And Diversity In Fall-Winter 2016 Collection
The issue of beauty standards and racial diversity is still a common topic in fashion: hence the Black Models Matter merchandise that has been circulating New York Fashion Week. Thankfully, there are a few design houses that have the fundamental notion of diversity engrained into the very philosophy of their brand. For Chromat’s Becca McCharen diversity is second nature as the innovative designer continues to produce runway shows and ad campaigns that showcase racially diverse models of all sizes. For the brand’s latest collection, the designer once again sticks to her guns and gives us fashion as she sees it.
Plus-size model and Rocker, Denise Bidot , opened the Chromat Fall Winter 2016 show with an emphatic appearance. Entering onto a completely dark runway, Bidot was illuminated only by the fluorescent neon straps accenting the garments. Outfitted in a spectacular bodice that doubled as an architectural focal point becoming a gravity defying cage hovering around a sleek above the knee skirt, the model set the tone for what was to be a daring evening.
The athleisure motif continued throughout the collection as we saw reworked basics including leggings, bikinis, shorts and skirts. Pushing the concept even farther, McCharen teamed up once again with tech company Intel for 3D printing. Utilizing her background in architecture, the young designer approached the collection from a technical perspective. A real standout was her use of thermoplastic polyurethane, a synthetic fiber known for its elasticity and transparency and resistance to oil, abrasion, and grease, a perfect textile for active-wear.
Chromat, along with other fashion labels who dare to embrace the advance of technology and diversity are undoubtedly the future of fashion and we’re excited to see just how quickly the industry adapts.
