Nicholas K Fall Winter 2016: The Nicholas K Brand Presents its FW16 Collection at New York Fashion Week Fall 2016.
The term modern has become a bit ambiguous, especially when discussing fashion collections. However, the latest collection from siblings Nicholas and Christopher Kunz have left us with this one word. Inspired by a progressive architectural aesthetic, the duo present a collection that pulls us in two directions, and according to the team, this was exactly their intention.
The Nicholas K brand is one of the ‘cool kids’ when it comes to innovative design. Grounding their design in a feeling of nomadic sensibilities, the designers have not chosen to simply follow an aesthetic, instead they have created one. For the Nicholas K Fall Winter 2016 collection, the brand shows us that they repertoire consists of more than street style driven pieces. “This season it’s a little bit more dressed up, but still very urban,”Christopher Kunz told WWD.
From the very first look emerging onto the runway, we noticed something a bit different about this latest collection. An all black layered ensemble eased down the runway revealing a tough looking sleeveless leather top, sleek trousers underneath what appeared to be a tied shirt posing as a skirt. The next 3 looks followed suit and for a second, it appeared to be a decisively singular collection. What we saw next eased our worries. A series of well articulated, layered looks continued, this time however the color palette was enlivened. Whites, Nudes, and Prints authoritatively canvassed silhouettes giving the collection a sense of momentum. Fabrics wrapped and slouched seemingly at will creating elegant gowns, capes , and outerwear before ultimately giving way to more opulent textiles. Iridescent jewel tones in hues of purple, grey, emerald, and sand reworked the collections’ shapes, revealing versatility that was equal parts urban and sophisticated.
This latest collection was a step in the right direction for the Nicholas K brand. Pairing the brand’s already brilliant understanding of silhouette, the Kunz siblings have now previewed their ability to translate their designs into different markets. Perhaps this was a strong note to both buyers and editors alike, one that illustrates a brands commitment to innovation and forward thinking.
