Comme Des Garcons Homme Plus FW16: An Offering Of Peace

Often times during hardships, war, and even the colder seasons, we forget to stop and smell the flowers. Rei Kawakubo reminded us to do just that with her Fall-Winter 2016 Comme des Garcons Homme plus collection in Paris.

In recent news, France decided to close their borders, the first time since the Algerian war in the 60s. Kawakubo’s collection featured men in armor-like clothing, jackets and coats with military aspects, protecting themselves like France,  “the Armor of peace” she calls it. She referenced motifs dating back to the aesthetic used in the Renaissance: jackets split at the seams, but clasped back together, resting on the outer side of the arms like armor, the shoes resembling armadillo shells, and jackets punctured with nails.

To soften the stiff motifs of armor, Kawakubo incorporated silk brocade patters of roses, on jacket sleeves, shirts, and culottes, as well as softer tones of blues, beige, and grays. Crowning the collection were rose headdresses resting delightfully on the tops of models heads juxtaposed against others looks with featured disheveled war torn beauty with sunken in and dark sooty make up.

The show closed with the models carrying bouquets of silk roses as signifying a reawakening of peace for the people of France and the rest of the world.
