Chanel Pre-Fall 2016: Métiers d’Art Collection
As Paris sat still devastated by the tragic events of the November, 13 terror attacks, Karl Lagerfeld prepared to present his aptly themed Métiers d’Art Collection before an audience of dazed spectators looking for some reason to smile and be inspired. What attendants got was of course far more than they ever expected. Taking us back to the early roots of CoCo Chanel herself and the now iconic brand, Lagerfeld takes us on a journey of intrigue centered around the conflict of change.
“I didn’t know when we started the idea of Paris in Rome that it would be the best moment to show a perfect, romantic Paris when Paris today in reality is the opposite of a romantic city,” Lagerfeld shared with WWD. “It’s really unbelievable, no?”
There were a lot of aspects that were truly unbelievable about the Chanel Prefall 2016 collection. Staged at the renown Cinecittà film studio No. 5, amidst a cinematic backdrop of 1940s themed style influences, guest were transported to days of yesteryear. Inspired by late French production designer Alexandre Trauner, who made a name for himself designing sets for most of Marcel Carné’s films in the Thirties and Forties, the atmosphere was enlivened with details as Lagerfeld made our eyes dance across his grand production. A quaint cheese shop here; an enticing wine shop next door, this was Paris just as Gabrielle Chanel had seen it, and we too each became her.
The collection itself, was a studied depiction of the history of the Chanel aesthetic. Recounting various moments in Chanel’s life such as her apartment on Via Giulia and dressed a host of French actors for Italian movies in the Fifties and Sixties, including Anouk Aimée, Jeanne Moreau, and Delphine Seyrig. In some ways Lagerfeld showed us a much younger Chanel attitude. While still tailored and meticulously crafted, the collection revolved around a certain lightness that was both optimistic and intriguing.
Totaling 83 looks in all, the collection hit all of the marks. We saw the expected tweed suiting separates, tailored trousers, feminine dresses, dainty outerwear, and heirloom inspired accessories galore- all in different shade of emotional texture. Bottoms in polished leathers, dresses in delicate laces, and textiles that made the mind dizzy in fascination. Lagerfeld truly brought Paris to Rome.
