Teen Vogues Casts 3 Black Models on August 2015 Cover

Teen Vogue Casts 3 Black Models for Its August 2015 Cover.

Diversity is a perpetually sticky topic in the world of fashion. With runways shows, advertisements, and magazines dominated by an overwhelming majority of non-ethnic models, it begs many the question: why? Teen Vogue offers a sort of progressive response in their latest issue as they choose an ethnically centered cast as the ‘Next Top Models” of the fashion world.

The title is certainly not unearned. Aya Jones, Lineisy Montero, and Imaan Hammam have all made a career for themselves in spite of the lack of opportunity for models that look like them.

You may recognize Hammam from her US Vogue cover naming her a an “Instagirl” or perhaps you’ve seen her absolutely sensational campaign appearance for Givenchy.

Jones, already a runway regular in her very young career has opened a show for Prada and Montero has even walked for the iconic fashion house as well.

The question is certainly not why, but we are a little curious as to why now. Teen Vogue Beauty and Health Editor Elaine Welteroth, who happens to be bi-racial herself had an inspiring and resolute reply, “I will be the first to say that the industry still has a long way to go in addressing the deep need for more affirming messages that reinforce the fact that [a girl of color] is beautiful and that she matters,” she wrote.

Could this be another step in the right direction for Teen Vogue and the industry in general? Or is it just another attempt to sell more issues? Only time will tell, but we must applaud the effort.
