Olivier Rousteing Presents the Balmain Spring Summer 2017 Collection in Paris.
The Balmain aesthetic has always been about bling and a maximalist more is more approach. It’s this very mantra that has garnered the brand an A-list roster of faithful #balmain army ambassadors. Influencers, entertainers, and top models like Kim Kardshian, Kanye West, Jourdan Dunn, and Gigi Hadid have woven themselves into the fabric of the french fashion house. The Balmain FW16 campaign was literally a music video for Kanye West’s Wolves single. However, for the brand’s Spring Summer 2017 collection, Rousteing offers a surprisingly softer, less embellished Balmain collection. Many speculate that the less glitzy approach could be due to the brand’s recent acquisition by Mayhoola, the investment group linked to the Qatari royal family.
My Balmain army has shed its armor,” Olivier Rousteing shared with WWD. Departing from his hard edged and sometimes intimidating aesthetic, the designer opened the show with light, silky layered numbers. A color palette of mostly greens and oranges dominated the runway. Rousteing presented billowing jumpsuits, wrap dresses, and sometimes a combination of the two. Accented by technical cut-outs, our eyes darted upwards toward the shoulders, under the bust, and intricately weaving around the bodice. Building a steady, almost rhythmic momentum the collection seemed to change gears. Exotic textiles and more saturated hues were cut into sexy kaftans, wrap dresses, and gowns. We were led closer and closer to the Balmain we know until the collection reached its eventual crescendo. Sophisticated chainlink gowns and wrap dresses shimmered in metallic gold and silver. Bits of flesh flashed beneath sheer fabric, through side splits and perfectly placed cutouts.
The Balmain army was filled with its usual roster of top supermodels including Jourdan Dunn, Gigi Hadid, Natasha Poly, and Maria Borges. Watching from the front row was an equally strong crew including the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. However, the real test of Rousteing’s latest collection won’t be its celebrity following, it’ll be the consumer.
