Demna Gvasalia presents a fascinating Balenciaga Spring Summer 2017 Collection in Paris.
Balenciaga champions unconventionality. The fashion house represents an utterly modernist concept. It merges fashion, art, and architecture dynamically into one singular discipline. The brand’s sophomore designer Demna Gvasalia demonstrates a mastery of this peculiarly poignant aesthetic. For the Balenciaga Spring Summer 2017 collection Gvasalia reimagines the feminine gaze presenting a collection that begs a second look – and then another.
It all starts with the silhouette. We’re talking exaggerated shoulders of epic proportions. These definitely aren’t your grandmother’s shoulder pads. Trenchcoats and boxy jackets were broadened with the use of a whalebone rod strategically placed around the shoulders. There was also plenty of bodycon, skin hugging moments. The designer demonstrated what seems to be an absolute fascination with spandex. Printed blouses and trousers in a rainbow of colors were transformed into feminine tops and spacesuit feeling pants that completely covered the shoes.
Gvasalia’s use of color was jarring. The palette ranged from classic navy and red to electrifying orange and pastel purple, pink, and blue. There was something remarkably fresh about the collection. Besides the obvious statements on gender fluidity, the designer provoked a youthful, street couture vibe. The type of collection sure to be a hit with editors and street style fashionistas alike.
