We Sit Down with Our Resident Artist, Michael Alan, to Talk About His Inspiration and Thought Process Behind Upcoming Show, FU** Depression.
The ingredients for “The Living Installation” are way more then they seem. You look at the piece and you see a kind of hap-hazard altered state world of extreme various consciousnesses’ and nudity and fragility.ty.
The piece itself has so much prep, at least seventy to a hundred hours of prep in each show, with practices that involve drawing the models, understanding the shapes and the forms of their bodies that will beÂ built on in order to distort them.
In order to distort reality you have to know reality. It’s like the lesson of drawing 101.You have to know what you are distorting, otherwise it’s going to look like nothing. I put a lot of focus on understanding how best to depict the models. I draw the models and through the process, I begin to understand their bodies. Then we make an agreement of what’s going to go on them and what they want to do, who is their character and how that’s going to come alive. I meet with them all individually and it’s a fun time with some jokes, videos and music, but it’s a good four or five hours of work We go over the music, and how they’re going to interact and what does their character mean and what’s going to make them happy.
The key for me is making them happy, not just like they are a model that’s getting painted on. That’s been done, that’s been overdone, who cares. The goal of the show is creating happiness for the community and the performers, and especially for the performers. We just spend a lot of time. It’s like a contract in a sense, it’s a verbal contract, and what do they want to do in this window, and then we go back and forth and work it out from building the masks, to the props, to the dresses, to deciding how they enter the space, what their speed will be, the actual speed. If you have a show like the one coming up where there are seventeen performers, if everyone is doing the same speed…well it is what it is. I’m making living animations, so in order to make that, everyone has to have different speeds to fool the human eye. It’s choreographed in a sense, with so much going into it. Then there’s the live music, some of which has been pre-recorded and then recorded over. It’s just an endless circle, this world.
